Description

Te Aupōuri, Ngaī Takoto, Te Rarawa, Ngāti Kahu, Ngāti Korokoro, Te Roroa, Ngāpuhi, Tuwharetoa, Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga. Ange Oliver is a Māori adoptee.

This exhibition presents works by Ange Oliver towards the completion of her Master Māori Visual Arts degree at Toioho ki Āpiti, Pūtahi a Toi, Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University.

The title of the exhibition Hutia Te Rito o Te Harakeke comes from a whakataukī of lament originating from Te Aupōuri. Ange interweaves its meaning with the primordial separation, Te Wehenga, the parting of Ranginui and Papatūānuku. The works dwell between the dichotomy of connection and separation, between darkness and the world of light. Ange transforms ukutea and cotton by pushing beyond traditional methods to create a new visual language. Manifesting as kākahu-type forms, the pieces function simultaneously as symbolic protection and a compositional device allowing her to freely explore ruptures of potential and complexity.

Ranginui – Sky Father
Papatūānuku – Earth Mother
Te Wehenga – The Separation
Kākahu – Cloak
Ukutea – Gypsum Plaster
